Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ), the industry body that funds training for construction workers, has launched a statewide-campaign targeting Queensland’s 175,000 tradies and construction labourers.

The campaign is encouraging tradespeople across the state to boost their future career options by doing CSQ-funded training.

To deliver the message to Queensland’s tradies, a humble builder’s portaloo has been transformed to take centre stage in the campaign. The portaloo has had a magical make-over to house a “Fortune Teller Portaloo Fella” that dispenses wisdom: encouraging tradies to take up the training opportunity of CSQ funding.

The campaign has been developed to address an identified need for increased training and development of the industry’s workforce to meet the ongoing soaring demands of future projects.

CSQ CEO Brett Schimming says the training rate in the construction industry is 30% lower than in other industries.

“One reason for the lower uptake of training in the construction industry is the perceived cost barrier – more tradies would be training if they knew that CSQ would cover nearly all of their training costs.

“Only 30% of construction workers know that CSQ funding covers between 75% and 100% of course costs.  They would be surprised to learn that at least half of participants in CSQ-funded training have completed their course at no cost to themselves.

“We hope that tradies and labourers will connect with this very real opportunity to secure a better future for themselves.

“Training opens up more opportunities for workers but it also increases their salaries – a typical tradie with a vocational qualification earns 20% more than someone with no post-school training,” he said.

Apprentices, tradies and workers will be targeted with Your Future Lies in Getting New Skills messaging throughout February and March, directing them to information on how to access training opportunities with CSQ funding.
